Knee support after an accident? help

Hello Bike Hub forum,

I am here today to get some information from you guys if that's possible. I have always ridden my bike to work, the shops, to meet friends, you name it the bike comes with me everywhere. Unfortunately, about 9 months ago I was involved in a car accident and I ended up breaking one of my knee caps. Now I am up and walking around again and would love to get back on a bike but even riding down a flat road is causing very uncomfortable pains in my left knee when peddling.

I have seen online that you can buy the knee supports like this one here https://www.easyprices.com/f/Home/Result?searchWord=Knee+support that are made from a material and elastic to keep it tight to your knee. Has anyone had any experience using these? and do you think it would help with any pain relief? or possibly retraining my knee?

I have read so much information online but the truth is most of the products you read about online are advertised to be awesome but you soon find out they are not. I thought it would be best for me to come here and ask the riders themselves.

Really looking forward to speaking with you guys. If there is any other information you guys need please comment below and I will be sure to get back to you ASAP.

Thanks

Hi mate I had same problem, in my experience the only thing that strap wil work for is giving you a rash.

Rather start off with a stationary bike and take it very slow, do some kniee strengthening exercises and give it alot of time to heal up. Also stretching the kniee is very important at the right time. Focus on strengthening all the muscles aroand the kniee.

I used some very stretchable ("verband") not sure what its called in english haha, I strapped my kniee nice and tight, still use it today when im doing squats. Also get some Of that exercise elastic rubber straps and use it for slow exercises.

The flexibility is very important, I didnt do it so have a stiff kniee now.

I use to have one of those kniee supporters but was not very helpful in my opinion.

Feel free to contact me if you want some advise on exercises for strengthening.

Agreed. Or a physiotherapist....

I think it's too late for a physiotherapist.

Physio for acute phase. Bio for chronic phase.

ie: Physio for rehabilitation just after injury or operation. Bio for long term rehabilitation that requires changing of movement or strengthening muscle groups to provide support after injury or operation.

Yeah, that sucks! I would focus on getting the muscles around the knee stronger before attempting to do anything further. Rather consult with a Bio or a Physio, but try to get someone who specializes in sport injuries and know and understand the rehabilitation for a particular sport. And after that I would say get a gym membership and do some squats, they do wonders for knees and it makes you stronger and then you can ride further
