Fat bikes again

So, having read through some of the forums, I've got a good idea of fatbikes, and as I'm about to become an owner of one, wanted some feedback about them!

Firstly, what trails suit them well in the helderberg and Stellenbosch areas?

Second, I was planning to spend a lot of time on the beach/es but I've now read about how terrible it is for the wear of drive trains and bits. Any truth to this if we just stick to the sand areas? Any dune areas close to somerset west to get away from salty sand?

Any other advice, tips, or tricks would be greatly appreciated!

I spoke to a guy on the Bottelary Hills trails who was riding a fat bike. His wife or girlfriend also had one and they seemed to have no issues riding on normal trails. He had the lauf fork on his bike if I remember correctly. I say go for it!

Which fat bike did you buy?

Thanks man! I'm hoping to keep my offroad riding as relaxed and adventurous as possible, and I belive a fatty will help me out with that.

And I bought the sexy pugsly that's in the classifieds! Unfortunately will only be able to get hold of it end of next month when I'm in JHB and can bring it back down.

Was really hoping to get on the beach too. I suppose I'll have to see what kind of a bitch the beach sand is, but should be okay.

You can ride wherever you want to ride when you have a fatbike. I wouldn't want one as my primary bike but they are a blast. Sure salt and wet sand does accelerate wear on drive trains but it is a price worth paying in my opinion. Great fun on the beach. Go with affordable components, Make sure you wash and lube after every ride and most importantly enjoy.

On to my second Fat bike now. I have a 29er that a barely touch anymore, really enjoy the Fatty.

Its possible to use it as a primary bike so long as you keep up with your training. Great on the thick sand, technical rocky climbs and of coarse opens up different lines in technical sections that a normal mountain bike might find a bit challenging.
