I have increased the tension and the play is still there with new cleats. The connection between pedal and cleat is crap with Shimano pedals, this is more obvious when pedaling in circles like I think all cyclists should. This is actually a very bad drawback of Shimano/SPD pedals. People unknowingly adapt to pushing down more to reduce the vertical play.

Hmmm.... I played around with mine last night and I have zero vertical play.

 

I do agree that most people have relatively rubbish pedal strokes, but I'm not sure if play in the contact point is the reason.

 

I have a set of crank bro's which I enjoy the feel of but they are made of cheese.

 

If the clipping in and out mechanism isn't sticky or get too clogged by mud, pedals are pedals. Those HT pedals look pretty rad and if they are good enough for Gwinn, peasants like us should lap them up!

 

Like everything I suppose, the balance is just that, a balance. There are pro's and con's to pretty much everything bike related
