SRAM XX/X0 RD Cage Spring Tension

Good afternoon hubbers,

Has anybody been able to repair/replace the internal cage spring on a XX or X0 RD? LBS responses are generally: "NOPE, can't be done"

I have seen springs for sale on e-bay and other sites, hence they can be replaced. Mine lost it's tension. I have successfully dismantled a wrecked unit to determine the level of tech effort.............no sweat really.

Any advise please.

Thx

If you can find a spring it shouldn't be an issue. But therein lies the fun part.

Maybe a wanted ad on the classifieds will turn up a trashed RD with the spring still intact.

I have done this many a time - you have a trashed lower half of an RD and a trashed upper of another and put the 2 together - hey presto!

The spring is generally supplied with the lower cage as a kit, and I can say with confidence that the local Sram agents have some kits in stock...

Hey Mook,

If you can't find an original spring (or if it's too expensive), there is a place in Paarden Eiland that will make up a spring for you - you'll need to give them the original and ask them to make the same spring but stiffer etc. and maybe ask them to make 3 springs, each with different tensions. Cost me R100 bucks for x3 custom springs, made while I waited.

Bear in mind that these guys aren't specialists, they simply give you what you tell them to do/what you ask for. I was last there in 2015 and cannot for the life of me remember the places name... should crop up on Google if you use the right keywords. Will post if/when I remember.

This is a last resort :P

The only reason the P-spring should lose tension is because of rust and gunk.

My XT P-spring lost tension, I opened it up, removed the rust, packed it full of marine grease and now it's working 100s.

I've seen these springs come out bent before because the derailleur was disassembled carelessly. If this is your case you should be able to bend it back using a bench vice and a screwdriver.

Do the Xo 10spd non clutch Rd use the same spring as the type 2(not 2.1)?

I stuffed my type 2 Rd spring and I have a spare xo Rd non clutch but you have to drill out the middle pivot to remove the spring unlike the type 2 which has a bolt, so I'd like to know if they are compatible before I start drilling.

Sometimes they snap. And you're not gonna fix that with a bench vice.

Thank you guys,

I will try Christofison's advise and first clean it out. I've had it since new and it has never been opened or abused intentionally.

Thx Skylark, but do not drill yet. I will report back if cleaning it solved the tension issue. If not, then I might try Yusran's proposal to have some machined. I have seen the repair kits(bottom cage assembly + spring) advertised on ebay, BUT they are very expensive.

Cheers all and thx again. Your the best!
