FOX F29 Fork Approx Repair Cost

Hi Guys

I am looking at a bike that is otherwise in great condition and very well priced, but the forks are a bit stuffed. The plating is gone and ridges are worn quite deeply, I can easily feel them with my finger.

1) What will this set me back to repair approximately? Is there a chance that they can't be repaired?

2) How do I know if the bike takes a tapered or straight fork stem? The frame is a 2016 Sola 1. I can get the bike for such a good price it might be an option to buy it and replace with another air fork like a Reba RL (secondhand).

3) What will happen to them eventually - loose pressure? Will I be able to ride them perhaps until I find another fork for sale and then repair en sell the old ones, are do they look bin-ready?

No idea how they look like on the inside...

Thank youf70f2808da0ac847403b8d69bbfc2568.jpg597c01f68bf7ad7f39b8b4a247a60077.jpg398968f36f0430711149b8c61eb52099.jpg

A very similar recent thread with plenty of answers to your question:

https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/169502-fox-fork-damage/

In summation, your uppers are stuffed and will need to be replaced. Your seals will also need to be replaced and the entire fork serviced and checked for other damage.

It can be ridden like this, but it's going to chew seals, leak oil, and likely just feel like crap. But read the linked thread for a lot more info.

Or call / ping Droo @ stoke in Cape Town. Honestly it's going to cost. Those uppers are gone and replacement isn't going to be cheap. Full service will be around R1400 odd but he can give you some options on the uppers. Might be worth keeping an eye on the classifieds here for a 2nd hand fork rather and eBay for some replacement uppers. Unfortunately they are the most common parts to be damaged so there isn't that much about.

Guesstimate: R1400 for a service. R2500 for replacement uppers (plus shipping and Tax / vat / Duty from eBay - maybe R850 odd).

Thanks, I came accross another thread but that fox fork only had discoloration, didn`t come accross this nice thread. I will get in contact with Droo or Jacques today as I need to tell the oke if I want the bike or not.

Droo in the other thread said if the fork is a CTD Evolution to just bin it, how do I check what this fork is? It just says Fox F29 32 Series on the stickers.

One unanswered question please gents, if I want to look for a replacement, how can I check if the stem should be straight or tapered?

CTD were year models 2015 and earlier if I'm not mistaken (not sure how much earlier). On the right hand side of the fork on the crown where you set compression damping you will see three settings, if those settings say "Climb, Trail, Descend) it is a CTD model.

I think, and please take with a grain of salt as I am not sure - the F29 is a model before CTD.

As for tapered or straight, google the frame and check the headtube specs. If the headtube is 1 and *1/2 inches at the bottom and 1 and 1/8 inches at the top it's tapered.

IMO, the repairs on this fork is going to run you up quite a few bucks, and it's not an amazing fork, so prob not worth the money. If I were you I'd rather keep my eyes open for a 2nd hand Rock Shox Reba, Rock Shox Revelation, of Fox 32 with FIT4 damper.

Tapered - Sola 1 2016 - 29” Butted 6061 Aluminium, Tapered 1-1/8” – 1.5” Headtube, Shimano Pressfit BB, 12mm Thru Axle Rear

But 1 and 1/2 on the bottom and 1 and 1/8 on the top.

Visually it looks exactly like this, which incidentally became for sale yesterday.. .

For double the money, and probably less than a repair, I can get a Reba:

The black one will go better with the frame!  :D

If I was given the choice I'd just ditch it, it was never a good fork in the first place, it's buggered and you're better off looking for a RS Revelation or an all rounder. If you're more XC based that Reba is a good choice. That other F29 is showing the same signs of horrid on the legs. On the up side you can low ball a bit on the bike if you want it because you will have to get a new fork! Price minus fork cost should do it... or original budget plus new fork cost and see what that will get you in the classifieds! Either way, 1st thing you should do is get the fork you're going to keep cracked open by by a suspension specialist like Stoke or the guys up in Jozi (not sure where you're based) and a full service. You need to factor that into your budget as well. Last thing you want is an unseen issue in the new fork that you start riding and start damaging. Forks are an investment and need love other wise they will bite your wallet again!

My bad - early morning reply.

RS is always a good way to go. I have nothing against Fox (actually have Fox on the majority of my bikes), but RS is alot cheaper to service and maintain.

The front wheel is brand new and supports Thru Axle and QR, so at least that opens up plenty options when looking for a replacement fork. The current fork is QR.

Are the RockShox fork on this page arranged from Best to Worst from top to bottom and left to right?

Bottom Right is the worst and Top Left is the best? https://www.sram.com/rockshox/component/forks#sm.00069vltyntseh910dh12ey6gk16f

Is this SID better than the Reba or the other way around?

https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/250792-rockshox-sid-29-dual-air-fork-qr/

https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/267407-rock-shox-reba-rl-solo-air-29er/

Does the length of the steerer only matter visually, provided it is long enough for a comfortable handlebar setup? With spacers used top and bottom to get a good fit?

SID is the top of the range XC fork (or RS-1 depending on your persuasion), followed by the Reba.

Pike is the top of the range trail fork (can also be used for enduro), followed by the Revelation.

The forks on that page are not arranged best to worse. They are arranged by type. RS-1, SID, and Reba are XC forks; Revelation and Pike are trail forks; Lyrik and Yari are enduro forks, Boxxer is a DH fork. Different applications. Of course there is some overlap in what you can use the forks for - some guys use a Pike for Enduro, or a Lyrik for trail riding. You would typically be looking at a Revelation if you are more trail oriented (or heavy), or a Reba or SID if you are more XC orientated. A Pike would be overkill for that frame.

I would go for a thru axel fork if possible, just more future proof.

Then length of the steerer does matter - the longer the better. It will allow you to find the correct ride height for you, and then you can cut from there. Once I find the correct ride height I like to keep about 10mm of spacers above the stem allowing me to change my ride height if I am going to take on steeper downhill trails. Not everyone is a fan of how that looks, I just like the spacers there to keep my options open.

You're in for about R 6 500 to get that sorted out, and at that price for an old QR fork you're probably better off with a second hand Reba or Sid if you can find one in decent nick. Just bear in mind that you'll be in for a service straight away on a used fork, and if a RS fork is worn like that you may as well throw it in the bin - RS don't sell bushings separately, so you've got to replace CSU and lowers.

Hi Gents

I replaced the Fox with a Reba off the hub; now what is the old Fox good for?

Do I bin it, donate it, sell it, wait for and import uppers for a repair, none of the above?

Thanks to madmarc I could identify that it is a "2011 32 F29 100 RL - 326339-0318".

Happy hubbing!

You are more than welcome to donate it to me...

I'll find a use for it...
