Going 1x10

I have done the 1x10 (32t chainring and 11-40 replaced 15+17 with 16 and added 40 on my previous bike) but I want to do it again on my other bike but only 32t chainring and keep rear as is, 11-36. Anyone else who is running the same setup and what is your experience/feelings regarding this setup?

Hou die rubber op die grond!

The way I look at it is guys with singlespeed setups ride stage races, it's hard but doable, you'll have 9 extra gears over a single speed so essentially you'll be fine no matter what, you just won't be able to spin up hills and you will spin out going down steep hills but still you'll be fine.

Difference is an enjoyable experience on its own, that's the best attitude.

I just liked the simplicity of 1x and my middle chainring started jumping like crazy today.

I did the first ride on Saturday with the new setup. I have the 30 tooth upfront and then 11-36 on the back, it was different getting half way up a climb and there is no bail out granny gear but it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be and the climbs seem to finish faster. I was thinking at a later stage I might get the suntour 11-42 casette but after this weekend I honestly don't think there is a need for it. and the simplicity of the 1x is awesome.

With a 30t front ring you must spin out very quickly/wear the hell out of the poor teeth on your 11t cog?

There are so few teeth on the 11t they wear prematurely, you can buy the 11t cog on its own, I order them from eBay, around R100 each, the suntour 11t cog works perfectly on my shimano 10sp cassette, some lbs stock them aswell probably be around R200 though.

If you're not sure how your legs will do with the 11-36 at the back, just set the limit screw on your rear derailleur so your 1x setup with 11-40 at the back can only shift to its 36T; essentially making it an 11-36 cassette.

On Sunday I have actually tried to stay on my middle chainring 30t and used all of the cassette. Think I'll need the 40 as a granny because I just suck on hills[emoji15] and had to go down to the 22 but was mostly on the second last one before the 36t

Thanks for the info I have a XT RD on the bike at the moment glad to hear it works.

You might need to adjust the b-screw, I put the Kalbo 42 ring on and it was quite noisy, the b-screw will give you some space between the 42 and the upper RD wheel.

So I have done my conversion, but I struggle with the setup of the rear derailleur. 11-36 with 16 replacing 15 and 17 and added the 40. From 6 from the top to 3 closer to 11, the derailer sounds as if it isn't in gear??6306e528b4a48c81512d3e3e9016284c.jpg6244387442923bb8353dcdaf19727ff5.jpg

Check your indexing, and also bent derailleur hanger is a possible cause.

Did you have to adjust your B screw?

I am running a 32 upfront and 11-42 at the back with a sram med cage X7. I had to adjust the B screw, all my gears work perfectly. The granny is ok, a 30T infront would of been a better bargain for me, but I am spinning out with the 32T on 11, so I guess I will have to keep it like that and toughen up.

Thanks, yes I did adjust the B screw, think it's only fine tuning but I'm struggling with it. Luckily I have a friend who will be able to come by and help.

It worked 100% before the 40 and 16, but in the other's it's fine. Derailer seems straight, will have a go at it again tonight[emoji4]

A serious rookie mistake, almost too ashamed [emoji15] to post it, chain was incorrectly installed (by myself) through the rear derailleur. Now 100%. [emoji33]

I've taken a screenshot from Kalbo's website and it looks the same? [emoji15] [emoji33] c672c3ad211a0fcdaa030823b945c948.jpg
