Makeshift replacement skewer for trainer

Hi all  :)

I'm new here, glad to be part of the hub.

Yesterday found an indoor trainer at Cash Crusaders, exactly what I need since I somehow agreed to do Sani with my brother in law next year.

Unfortunately, having bought the trainer (RavX TX3), I discovered that it didn't come with a skewer. Now obviously the quick-release skewer I have on the bike doesn't work in the trainer so I have no way of using the thing.

Given that I'm training on a budget, I'm reluctant to buy anything from overseas or blow more than I spent on the trainer (R399) just for the skewer. Would it be sufficient to simply purchase a threaded bar from a hardware store, cut it to size and secure it to the bike with regular nuts? I'd probably use standard nuts to secure it to the frame and then dome nuts on the ends.

The main concern is whether this will damage anything, but if it's a valid option, then I can probably make a plan for under R100.

Alternatively, if anyone knows where I might be able to get a replacement skewer on a budget, that would be helpful too.

I am a bike noob, so anyone with a bit more experience in this area, your 2c would be appreciated  ;)

Surely with washers it can't be any worse than the existing skewer? It'll be on a stationary trainer after all, I just want the wheel to stay in one place :P

stainless or high tensile steel or thread will strip on such a thin threaded bar

Thank you for the kind offer :)

I can't find one on any of the online stores locally. I'll call all the bike shops in the area today and if I don't come right I'll take you up on that.

You could also just grind the clamp and make it more square to Hold the QR

What is wrong with your existing skewer?

The trainer clamps on to your skewer

Square peg round hole

aybe I am missing something here, but I had one of these trainers and it fitted the standard skewer just fine..but anyway

Not all skewers are created equal. If it's like the one Pista posted up top, no problem, but if it looks like this:

there's no way it would work.
