Hi all.

I acquired a very clean set of 2015 Mavic Crossmax SLR as part of a mtb bike build project I'm busy with. The set came with a 10spd cassette. I want to put on a 11spd.

I did so briefly yesterday, took off the 10 & put on an 11 thinking it may not fit. Yet, it went on and the crown on top took to the thread. Just. I'm just not sure how much thread it took.

I did not over tighten.I did not place wheel on the bike but is that right? The cassette spins easily.

The shimano free body on the wheel is 36mm

I'm waiting on a new 11spd cassette to be delivered but need to ascertian the mechanics of the hub sizing will work.

Any thoughts?

You should be able to replace the 10 speed with 11 speed cassette on the same freehub without any issues. Problem comes in when you replace Shimano with SRAM, as you'll need a different driver on the freehub body.

 Not always the case.

If it's an Sram XD driver, then it will not fit. Any other freebody takes both Sram and Shimano.

Most Mavic shimano freebodies are 9/10/11 speed compatible so you will not have an issue fitting the 11spd provided it is a shimano cassette

Or even a Sram one.

Or a Sunrace.

In some cases, there's a spacer between the cassette and hub when going 10sp. 1mm IIRC... take the spacer off for 11sp. That's the case with my Hope and AC hubs at least. DT Swiss has no spacer.

Apologies, that was what I was referring to. I should've made myself more clear. Some Shimano/SRAM cassettes and freebodies are interchangeable, but when you opt for the SRAM 10-X cassettes you'll need a different (XD) driver. Other cassettes like Sunrace and Box Two will also fit on the "Shimano" freebodies.

That was just the thing. There was no spacer. I thought there would be but not.

Yet, as said, the 11 cassette fitted but need to be certain that the 'crown lock, which might take maybe 3 turns to lock with the 10spd cassette on, only takes 2 turns to lock with an 11spd cassette installed......
