Suntour XCR32 not giving full travel

What a bleak day. First my square taper BB was loose and the crap tool I have to extract the cranks wound up stripping the threads so I couldn't get the arms off.  Eventually used a hammer to persuade them off and thought bugger it, swopped the crank for my Hollotech cranks from another bike....Then the fun began as I had to fiddle with the FD to get it changing properly....anyway...Square taper...hate them!.

I have noticed on the last couple of rides that my Suntour fork is not giving me the full 100mm travel, I get around 40-50mm at the most. Its an air fork so I have bled out all the air and tried to compress it and it still will not go beyond 40-50mm. I had a similar issue on a Fox and the fix was to open up the air side and make sure there was not fluid in there (which there was in my case and I removed some and the problem was fixed). The lock out is open so that isn't the issue.

Any ideas anyone? I have take it apart and I think its the gas filled cartridge that is faulty or something because thats the only piece that will not compress down (says its nitrogen filled and warns me not to fiddle!...)

Has anyone else had an issue like this? Fork is about 3 months old / 700km worth of riding. I don't really feel like driving up and down to get it fixed and wasting money on a low end fork so if there are no solutions then I will just look around for another fork...was hoping someone had the same problem out there though?

Damper's shot. Warranty time.

If not, replacement cartridges aren't that pricey if you can get hold of them.

Thanks, GhostFace is trying to assist me so I will strip it down again over the holiday and give him the cartridge number and see where we go from there....for now its a rigid ride!

A big Thank You to Ghost Face for sorting out the cartridge issue. They have sent me a new one and I will install it over the weekend.

Just reread your first post, and regarding that Fox - pull the air spring out, find the little foam ring just below the piston u-cup seal, and throw it in the bin. Then reassemble the fork as normal.

That little foam ring sucks oil up from the lower leg into the spring, making the ride harsh but more importantly removing lube oil from the lowers and causing premature stanchion wear.

Thanks, that Fox was on my Trance and sadly we parted ways a few years back....around the same time my ex left me....can you guess which one I miss more.....!

Can you please give more info on this? Just want to make sure I take out the right part

It's a problem specific to 2011-2012 model forks. Somebody had the bright idea to add a little foam ring on the air piston just below the main air seal to lubricate the seal from underneath. Unfortunately this caused bath oil to migrate into the spring.

If your fork has this issue, removing the foam ring sorts it out. But it needs to be done.
