Since my nukeproofs were stolen   I'm looking for replacement pedals.

Sadly, I no longer have the budget for nukeproofs, so looking for something I can buy locally for under R1000.

In gauteng or online

where? what?

help! :)

Hi Anine,

I work with Get Stoked Distribution (importers of DMR pedals and Ride Concepts shoes)

A bit of my history so you know where I'm coming from...

I have spent most of my riding career on flats and have spent many of those riding DH and later moving to trail/all mountain/enduro with about 5 years of being in cycling retail trade (meaning I got to try every brand for a fraction of consumer price)

In a nut shell this is the advice/feedback I can give, which hopefully helps you to understand the pros and cons of ALL flat pedals from ALL makes.

Most important aspects:

1. Good pedals > Good Shoes

Period.

2. Good shoes + Good Pedals = First prize.

You will likely never slip a pedal again unless riding enduro/DH where extreme jumps are involved.

3. Threaded grub skrews = Proprietary pins

(i.e both are good depending on your preference)

3.1 Grub skrews are cheaper, easier to find and grip the shoe much, much better

BUT...

3.2 The latter (pins) allow you to make foot adjustments (if you like that sort of thing) and are going to cause less harm to shins or calves. They also are less likely to bend.

4. Thinner > Thicker (height/profile)

You will feel much more "inside" the bike which translates to a feeling of the bike being an extension of you rather than your being a passenger on top.

5. Bigger platform > small platform

The more space on which your foot is supported, the more support you will have, however there is such a thing as too big which will increase rock strikes.

6. Concave shaped pedals > flat shaped pedals

The former allows your shoe to bend to meet the platform which adds the supportive feel and grip.

This is actually what I would regard as the dark art of flat pedals as surprisingly few brands get this right and it makes a massive difference to the feel!

Hope this helps - apologies it's such a long read, but there is lots to flat pedals and shoes!
