Why ?

Why larger in the front and back ?

that is a lot of effort and money to end with almost the same gear ratio .... or am I missing something ?

Find your ideal "gear ratio".

STAY with the back setup and go slightly smaller in front to get the granny you want.

the larger in front is only " optional "  and going smaller in front is not ( will be spinning like a nut job )

the rear is happening as i already got the cassette at the silly price of R699.00

and actually if i did all the changes it would actually give an easier granny and better top speed ...so ya " ideal gear ratio "

1x or 2x setup ?

There was a very nice thread about gearing options for 1x setups late last year ... sadly the proper top AND bottom end setups are still very pricey ... but at least there are solutions out there.

Until it becomes affordable my 2x setup will do the job nicely :)

1x  and this is exactly why i am fiddling with it....AFFORDABILITY ....not having to fork out for whole 11spd setup

ya some good info there but nothing to help with my specific question

Just maybe the answer is hidden in there somewhere .....  :whistling:

Top end - this is the easy one ... 11 teeth at the back dictates what you need in front to reach the speed you want.

So now you have the front cogg and work back to the number of teeth at the back for the granny that YOU need (as per your legs and your terrain)

To provide a nice wide range, without having insane jumps between gears they end up with 12 gears at the back.

So if you hack something that gives you enough of a granny .... with only 10 gears at the back then you are bound to have some large gaps between gears.  As this is not practical for the larger buying group this is not main stream - though the weight saving of such a system may well appeal to the serious snake ....

short version - not a practical setup for most riders, as such you may struggle to get the feedback you need.

PS - on my 2x setup I could go to 42 teeth (opted for 40 teeth) and only needed to adjust the B-screw.  no hangers etc required

please keep us posted

the gaps only get slightly larger in the last 3 big gears so im cool with that...and ya im not most people ..i like doing things different.

actually got feedback from Wolftooth and they think the 11spd link will be the answer

im just waiting for them to provide physical specs to confirm before i buy

feedback from Goatlink

The Goatlink tab thickness is the same on both of the Goatlinks.  The bolt hole to bolt hole dimension is 29 mm and 35 mm.  The Goatlink11 being the longer of the 2.

so now i just need to measure and see which unit will suit better ...im thinking the longer unit

big success the Goatlink 11 works like a charm. So 11-46 on an XT 786 10 speed deraileur.

Mawbs, are you still happy with this set up? I'm looking to do exactly the same but with a XTR986 RD. Dotting the i's after some serious googling. 11-42 with a 10 chainring is also an option to give the same granny..

30 chainring, not 10!

I'll looking at doing the exact same thing: 10x 11-46 Sunrace cassette and a 34 absolute black oval upfront and then getting the Goatlink 11 so the xt 786 derailleur will work.  How's the shifting?  Any issues?  Also where did you get that cassette at that price?  Did you need a longer B-screw as well?  Seems a nice solution for both more top and bottom end. Is your rear derailleur long or medium cage?
