Downhill vs Enduro

Hi Guys

I ride the Dirtopia enduros

However, I have noted that there is a WP Enduro and Downhill series

What exactly is the difference?

And is there a difference between enduro and gravity enduro?

Cheers

Dowhill = 1 track, just race down against the clock.

Enduro = Multiple stages raced against the clock. You obviously know the rest since you have done enduros, cut offs for the start of stages, non timed transfers.

DH courses should also be more gnarly than Enduro stages, not sure if this is the case with SA races though...

Not sure if I answered your question at all?

EDIT: Gravity enduro (and this is a guess based on the name), is maybe Enduros where you are shuttled to the top and don't have to pedal, whereas normal enduro you have to pedal to the top. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

gravity enduro is a timed event but they only time you on your downhill/single track....

so you can take 4hrs to get to the top of the hill but will only be timed on the actual downhill you complete

Is that not just enduro in general?

Thanks

Now that I come to think of it..........that makes perfectly sense (referring to Grease_Monkey first post)

The gravity enduro series (shuttling) also makes sense

Think that's pretty clear should anyone else come up with anything we don't know

Thanks

yes, that used to be the case, but now that "enduros"are getting longer and some take days to complete its now just a case of a name change basically

Hey Guys - "Gravity" Enduro it is just a name so as not to confuse a new rider with "Enduro" events linked to the Endurance-style events (IE - the 24 hour XC events etc.). There were some Endurance Events in the Cape and GP a couple of years back that were termed Enduro's before the global boom of the actual Enduro disciplines (Gravity-based) that we have today ....

The Western Cape has the Dirtopia Enduro events and then a separate provincial series which will be run by Enduro Western Cape - https://www.facebook.com/endurowesterncape/

These are 3 events that are sanctioned by CSA and will make up the WP Provincial Series rounds.

------

As for the uplifts etc. in Enduro - this is solely at the discression of the organiser and has nothing to do with a variation in the naming of the event between Enduro or Gravity Enduro.

------

Then Downhill is obviously exactly that - as per the UCI regulations it is a timetrial discipline on a descending course. Riders start at 30 sec to 1min intervals and the fastest rider down the course is the winner.

Awesome. I always though Enduro was actually a more fitting name for stage and endurance races than what it is. When I mention enduro to my non cycling friends they always think I am speaking about endurance races. This name change actually makes alot of sense.

Hi Grease Monkey ...

It is Not a name change - the name Enduro is here to stay for gravity based events - not endurance events ...

Under UCI regulation and Enduro World Series - the term Enduro is stipulated for the gravity discipline and not endurance ...

It is only here in SA where the MTB focus is solely driven towards marathon and large multiday endurance events that the term Enduro as "endurance" took hold. ..

These are the descriptions from the UCI rule book ... Note that it is NOT endurance ...

Chapter ENDURO EVENTS
(chapter introduced on 1.10.13)
§ 1 Race characteristics
4.4a.001 The race includes several liason stages and timed stages.
The times achieved in all timed stage will be accumulated to a total time.
An enduro course comprises varied off-road terrain. The track should include a mixture of narrow and wide, slow and fast paths and tracks over a mixture of off-road surfaces. Each timed stage must be predominately descending but small pedaling or uphill sections are acceptable.
Liason stages can include either mechanical uplift (e.g. chairlift), pedal powered climbs or a mixture of both. The emphasis of the track must be on rider enjoyment, technical and physical ability.
Any other system may be acceptable only under exceptional circumstances and subject to prior authorisation from the UCI.

So basically Enduro and Gravity Enduro is the same thing in essence?

Downhill is what we know Greg Minnaar to do

And the Cape Epic and W2W is Endurance (Obviously)

Correct!

Original Endurance Enduro - was Orienteering based ... where you are out for extended time in one go

Last year the 2 series were organized by the same dudes. WP Downhill.

The Downhill races you get shuttled to the top and you are timed over one "stage" last year the saturday was a shuttle day with Sunday being race day. There is an enduro class (Single crown bikes) but you race the same track as the guys on the dh bikes. There are b lines around the big stuff and you can ride the local tracks on a single crown.

The enduro side is being run by a new crew (Dan & Harry from iride) this year. If you've done a dirtopia you know how the gravity ones will work.

its actually funny that you can see the original focus in a South African standpoint in the CSA rule book for 2017 ... as they get it totally wrong ...

In the Contents you see this ...

03 MOUNTAIN BIKE COMPETITION TYPES ........................................................... 7
03.01 CROSS COUNTRY OLYMPIC: XCO [CIRCUIT LAP RACING]....................... 7
03.02 CROSS COUNTRY POINT TO POINT RACING: XCP .................................. 7
03.03 CROSS COUNTRY SHORT COURSE RACING: XCC .................................. 7
03.04 CROSS COUNTRY MARATHON: XCM ......................................................... 7
03.05 CROSS COUNTRY ELIMINATOR: XCE ........................................................ 7
03.06 ENDURO [ORIENTEERING] ......................................................................... 7
03.07 CROSS COUNTRY TIME TRIAL: XCT ......................................................... 8
03.08 DOWNHILL: DHI ........................................................................................... 8
03.09 OBSERVED TRIALS: OT .............................................................................. 8
03.10 FOUR CROSS: 4X......................................................................................... 8
03.11 STAGE RACE OR XCS .................................................................................

but then in the actual rules they have just copied and pasted from the UCI rule book ... and poorly copied and pasted at that - leaving out any notes on descending trails, uplifts and other key points of the discipline.

03.06 Enduro: END
An enduro course comprises varied terrain. Uphill pedalling sections are acceptable. The emphasis should be on the rider enjoyment, technical and physical ability.

I got that   The addition of the word gravity to Enduro is what I meant is a nice change...
