Yes I've used one successfully on an old Litespeed build - 48t in the front / 11/42 cluster on the back. worked a charm, although the shifts between the smaller cogs are less staccato, more sloppy.

 

I assume you're using it for a 1x11 setup? otherwise its probably overkill.

 

Now that I'm back in Jhb I've dropped the 42 down to a 36

Not a 1x11. Gravel bike with easiest gear being 32/32 with a large volume 700c tyre which further increases gearing. Old legs need help on some events

makes sense. sounds like a good solution, and this worked for me fine.

 

if you're keen to experiment you might also try an elliptical small chainring in the mix to add some relief on seated climbs. AbsoluteBlack recommend this, and it should mix fine with the regular large ring.  Also I've been wondering if a clutch-type derailleur would perform well in these type of builds - it would keep the drivetrain a lot tighter.

I bought a similar device on Aliexpress. Cost 2 dollars. It does work on a 1x10 using 36-11 cassette. Without the link the jockey wheels touch the cassette on the easiest gear at the back.
