Good day folks

I just noticed on my Scalpel SI that my rear brake cable housing has chewed a nice channel into my BB shell.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? What can be done to fix it?

I reckon if that cable housing can chew through carbon it will chew through a frame protector.

Warranty claim maybe? See attached picture. Bike is just over a year old and sone about 2000km.

Morning.

The cable and or housing was cut to short and or initially installed incorrectly causing the cable to rub up against the BB during the suspension movement.

How old is the bike - are you the first owner?

Happened to a couple of buddies of mine and if I recall was rectified by Omnico as they did the final assembly of the bikes.

That cable is way too short.

But your lbs should have picked up on that with a service.

Hope Omnico sorts you out.

doubt you'll have any luck with a warranty...

it's not  manufacturing fault and one can argue that with pre-ride inspections / washing your bike that you should have seen it coming.

on the bright side, the damage is purely cosmetic, so if i were you i'd use some black frame protection strips or similar to cover it up, won't give you issues again.

cables don't eat through frame protector strips so you can stop it in its tracks.

Same thing happened to my mate's 2018 Scalpel.  Omnico sent him to bike shop who he bought from as they assembled it, thus their error.  As previously mentioned, poor installation/servicing leads to this common error.  Believe it or not they wanted to charge him to repair their error!  Eventually they repaired it at no charge, and he was without his new bike for 3 weeks.

Fortunately carbon CAN be safely repaired.

Same run on my carbon1 2018... can't be everybike shop and assembly does this wrong... really... my cable is long... how thick is the bottom?

I just touched it up with nail polish and will track it...

Not a frame defect

So warranty not likely

LBS liable if they assembled ????????

(Heads off to check on my Scalpel ????????... yeah my cables have a distinct loop beneath the BB)

Cables in contact with a frame will chew into anything - carbon, steel or aluminium.  When two materials rub together it is the harder one that suffers.  Often see this type of damage on fork crown assemblies from the brake cable and road head tubes from the gear cables.
