My findings are that the revoshift 6sp grip is pretty good and served us well for about 1 year.

The 7 sp trigger as per ChrisF photos are very good because the trigger is smaller for shorter fingers.

The problem is if you go 10 ,11 sp as then you back to adult shifters so in my case I went back to grip shift in the form of Sram GX which has proven to be a blessing.

No more sore fingers and know more why aren't you changing gears.

bit more feedback -

Maritz is enjoying the trigger-shifter !

He still needs to be told when to use what gear .... he will happily spin away on the big gear at the back .....  When I tell him to "pull the small lever", he does so and shouts for joy at the extra speed ..... at the next hill I must remind him to "press the big lever" .....

It is taking longer for him to grasp this than I thought it would ....

The 7-speed shifter on the 6-speed cluster has one issue ..... sometimes he presses hard on the big lever, despite being in the top gear already - pushing the chain off the cogg .....

I bought a 7-speed Sunrace cogg and will fit it tomorrow - he will help.

all things considered - YES, I will recommend this to other parents.

Got an email from TREK about their range of kids bikes ....

grip shifts ....

once I regained my composure I replied to the mail asking if they have any kids bikes with DECENT GEARS .....

Let's see what/if any reply I get.

some more feedback ....

Maritz is now getting the hang of the gears ... he now begins to change up or down as needed, without me having to remind him.

The trigger shifter really WORKS for him !

And then the wheels came off .... Wednesday he suddenly had all kinds of problems with shifting the gears ....

We had to stop a couple of times so I could do the shifting for him .... and the reason was not immediately apparent .....

Back at home I was ready to do a strip down and rebuild to figure out what was happening ..... thankfully sanity prevailed, and a moment of clarity - he was pushing the trigger, the derailure moved, chain moved up, and then just jumped back .... for some reason he was not getting the lever far enough forward to "click" ....  He was en dropping his wrist to try and get his thumb far enough forward .....

Upon closer inspection - the trigger shift unit had rotated "up" on the handle bars.

Solution - rotate the unit to a better (lower) angle and tighten in place.  He can now change up and down without any issues.

For these small hands even such a small setting makes the difference between something working or frustration ....

PS - I  DID tighten the unit with the 5N.m torque T-wrench .... It needed a bit more to tighten properly.

PPS - It is now 12 months and six days since we bought the Momsen ... seat post is half way up already    He is sitting "properly" on the bike, and will soon be too tall for it ....    Been looking at 24'' bikes .... darned if any brand has a 24'' model with trigger shift .....

This is so awesome. My guy is on the same bike, seat still all the way down - I think it is time to move it up a bit also.

love these new shifters from SHIMANO.

This was not available a few months back, but now it is here !

both up and down-shift on the REAR is extremely easy !!  Propper trigger action.  Much better than on the Sunrace (shorter and lighter stroke for shifting).

FRONT ... looks like a friction shifter, but slightly different action ..... will give feedback as Maritz gets used to this .... for now I will just leave it mid gear in the front. (I do still have the three cogg Sunrace shifter)

What model are those ChrisF

I want to replace the grip shift on my son's bike and I am exploring the options.

On this, anyone know where to buy Shimano or SunRace 7 speed Freewheel Cassette's?

Why to kid's bikes come with parts you struggle to get replacements for? Ai

Update

Maritz LOVES these Shimano trigger shifters !!

He had a tumble in the driveway last week .... trying to ride over the curb one-handed ....

the 7-speed trigger got the worst of the tarmac ... the unit works, but the indicator cover got dislodged ....

I phoned around to find out what our options are.  Marks Workshop in Bellville has stock.  R145 for the shifter.

New unit is fitted
