KAROOBAIX is a one-day 245km race (with an individual time trial prologue) for modern gravel / cyclocross bicycles through the South African Karoo over 5 / 6 / 7 October 2018. The route is almost exclusively gravel, and range from super smooth hard-packed dirt to soft sand, sharp rocks and corrugations. The race will be semi-supported, and there will be two rest stops with good food, coffee and fresh water along the the 245km stage.

 

The name KAROOBAIX (pronounced ka-roo-bay) pays homage the Paris-Roubaix race, the murderous European Classic that earned itself the nickname Hell of the North, and our unique, spectacular and sometimes inhospitable semi-desert region of the Karoo.

I also couldn't find a price. The website requests I sign up to the news letter.

I see Stan posted that in April.

 

If cancelled it's a pity. I do remember it was helluva expensive in 2018. Maybe the stay over the whole weekend, take a leave day Friday and pay 4000 zar (guess) has lost it's appeal when you can do the Swartberg grand fondo and only have to be gone a day.

 

It's a rad idea and probably would have been better subscribed if it was on Saturday/Sunday or just Saturday and one didn't include the accommodation and food costs in the entry pricing.

 

Dunno.... Maybe Stan was just wanting a small, intimate event. 

 

I am merely speculating and have absolutely no idea if or why it was cancelled.

Did not file it

Pity because I was planning to do it

The Tankwa was the attraction for me

After that I did not bother to even get a bike.Still keeping my eye open for what I am looking for
