Super Deluxe COIL fitted to Trance

Trunnion

Recommended Posts

The CC shocks seem to have way too many reliability issues from what I have read (from here on the hub too), even though they work fantastic when they work, plus I believe hey have to be sent away for servicing? I was hanging out for the DVO ONYX SC fork but they are taking their sweet time.

Hoping @Droo will chime in with his expertise on the rear shock conundrum.

Issues were with the ccdb air systems. Coil have been largely lauded.

2017+ Trance's with coils are tough due to the newer Trunnion mount.   Also the leverage action of the linkage is not conducive to a coil, as they use the air-shock's design to prevent bottom out.

If you want a coil, get a Reign, the linkage is slightly rising rate and suits a coil better.

But you said Sektor fork?  Upgrade that first man, it's a turd of a fork...

Solid advice, guess it's back to purchasing another air shock (Topaz 2 when it comes out perhaps), or getting this one worked on.

Haha ja for sure the Sektor fork is ****. I am so used to it that I compensate for it's short comings, but an upgrade is on the list, 1st on the list.

I'd much rather spend the money on a better fork, and tweak the rear shock to have a similar-ish capability to what I'm after.  Fork is first line hits, find a 34 - had one on my 2017 Trance Adv 1 and it was great.

I think your main issue is that you've got the RT, not the RC3. I haven't had to strip one yet, but previous experience with RT model Monarchs is that there are a few shortcuts in the damper to keep costs down, much like in the Fox Evolution models, which compromise performance. If you're and average weekend warrior you won't notice, but if you ride it anywhere near its limit it'll start getting choppy.

In terms of replacing you're a bit limited because of the trunnion mount, but look at the RC3 or the Fox Float X2 or DPX2. I wouldn't go coil on the Trance, as mentioned, unless you're happy running minimal sag to prevent bottoming. Also the only way you'll find out of it fits is to fit it, at which point you may battle to get rid of it if it doesn't work.

Thanks for your input droo. I can get a 2018 Super Deluxe (with the cannister) for a good price on eBay. There have been some changes to the 2019 models, not sure if it's worth spending a lot extra for those changes though.

If you look at the graph posted on ENDURO Mountainbike magazine they show that the rebound curve has been changed. If I am reading the graph correctly I would be WORSE off with the new shock as it looks like high speed rebound has been increased, and slow speed slowed down. Or am I misreading it?

Sweet, thanks Yo-yo. I have sent a message but I reckon it will be gone soon if not already.

I picked up the phone and started to txt as I'm in Tokai now and can get there with cash asap but then realised I don't need it. It would just be the start of a slippery slope to another build. I wonder if CRC would refund me and take my Mattoc Back? That is another option for you if you want to replace your fork. They are on special at CRC for R6000ish

No they will never refund you, leave the fork for me  :P

I gave him a call, looks like I may get it.

That is good news but also a little bit:

I'd take a mattoc over both pike and 36, new.

Looks that way, but this may actually improve the feel compared to what you've got now - quicker recovery from big hits but slowing down towards the top of the stroke which will feel more plush over the smaller stuff.

As I said though - the RT3 should make more of a difference, the RT being the entry level version.
