Shimano PD-M520 servicing

I have taken my pedals off my mtb, done approximately 1000km on them. The bearings feel a bit rough, and I am a bit concerned about them. Does anyone own and/or know how to open these up to clean them if there is some sand inside? I presume the dirt is on the bridge where the axle goes into the pedal body so I don't need to do a complete overhaul.

Thanks

Shimano has a special tool to dissasemble these. Dunno what it's called but I'll take a pic tonight. Pretty easy to do, just have to be extremely careful as they have some very very small ball bearings inside ..........

Thanks very much BigBen, I think I will take it to my LBS and see what they can do. I had a pair of Ryder Mag road pedals which were pretty basic and easy to disassemble, curious to see Shimano pedals require special tools.

You should have gotten the tool in the box with the pedals. If not, your bike shop should just give you one. It's nothing to service these thing, just don't loose the bearings.

My experience ...... most LBS are to lazy to service pedals and will try to sell you a new set.

Hey BarryKM as far as I know the 540's don't need that tool, they have a metal fitting there that you can remove with a spanner. Maybe that's why .....
