I've got access to unior tools and will be considering this soon , tap existing hole to external and then pedal goes in the insert 

 

....still wondering if it's worth the hassle tho

I have fixed XT crankset that was stripped wasn't badly also think wrong pedal wrong side I just recut the thread and worked.

I would most definitely not weld on them or anything that heats it up to much because the aluminum gets brittle. Have welded up aluminium frames just to have them crack wright next to the weld again.

 

But take it to an descent engineering shop and get a quote because some guys charge by the hour and that price will scare you.
