a waist is a terrible thing to mind...

for 1 million us$ you can put 14 000 game special bicycles in africa

having seen countless idiots bring those bikes into the lbs, you'd need another $1-million just to fix them up!

the aussies' answer to the kimera: the blade.

 unveiled about an hour ago. will post a link to the story as soon as it appears on the net;

20080611_232214_blade_nu.jpg

from afp:

A new bicycle, designed with aerospace expertise, will give Australian cyclists the edge at this year's Beijing Olympics, team organisers said here Thursday.
The 'BT Blade' will be ridden by Australia's track endurance cyclists in events including the individual and team pursuit, while sprint cyclists will use the 'BT Stealth' variation, Cycling Australia said at the unveiling.
?

Sal Sansonetti, a former Olympian and director of the company that developed the bike, said?
"We looked at each element of the frame and modelled the stresses and loads applied to it?
"We then chose the best combination of carbon fibre grades and fibre orientation for each individual element. It's the same basic approach used in the aerospace industry."

some info i gleaned from the caption to this pic:

the bike weighs just 6.8 kilogrammes complete and costs A$25 000.

just so you know, Mr HR, I appreciate your pics.

here's something that might interest you...I saw this on the late sports news last night. Yesterday there was a ride-off between Ben Kersten (26 yrs) and Shane Kelly (36, 4 time olympian) for a spot on track sprinting team. Kelly recorded the faster time so he's off to his 5th olympics. The event was closed to media, apparently neither rider overly satisfied with the way the selectors managed it.

Like Mr HR said...it is just the first bike that is so costly the rest is pretty much affordable for the top riders.

Would you say it is fair to say that the first ever Canondale that was made was also costly?

Thanks HR for all the info.

As for wheels it looks like Mavic has taken the lead in sponsering teams on the track. 90% of the discs at World Champs were Mavic.
