why are the crankbros eggbeaters not more popular?

Shimano pedals have been the OEM pedal (pedals on new bikes) of choice for many years.

people usually stick to what they start with.

Every year more manufactures are using Crank Brothers pedals so their popularity is growing.

only problem with the cheap shimanos is that when one has stepped in a pile of mud...it takes about 10 pedalstrokes to get the cleat in....and then once it is in, it takes some preplanning to get it out again!!!

i have read they have spindle problems

KCensoredK!!!!

there have been very few incidents of spindle failure - 6 to be exact in South Africa

The main cause has been BIG crashes

egg beaters rule.

had mine for ages, only now getting a funny noise in the one when I spin the pedal - nothing that their inexpensive service kit won't sort out.

Why? Just knock your shoe on the side of the pedal before clipping in if you suspect you might be carrying crud..

If you want you can  make me an offer on a set of Candy's. Have done one race with them,(came standard on the bike) and then changed over to my trusted XTR's again

Bought Time Attac Carbon - very nice but pricey. I found a pair of eggbeaters and prefer them. They are lighter and easy to get in and out. They were good in the mud too!

I saw a guy on tv during the Crocodile Trophy in Aus trying to fix one with a rock. Ended up riding it with clip in part attached to the shoe and spindle on the bike. He did not clip in and out, he slided on and off.

he had a bearing failure.

the bearing is sealed so he must have been riding it a long time in a deteriorated state for it to collapse so dramatically. it would have felt rough and made a bit of a noise for quite some time.

rebuild kits (containing a set of bearings) are readlily available from the bike shops.

Replacing the bearing is so easy even I can do it - 2 minute job tops

It always feels as if I'm gonna kick the sh1te out of my bb (thinking back to the Stellenbosch MTB challenge last year)....it does help with relief of frustration though...

My fav pedals are still my original '93 Shimanos....the entry level ones. Nicer than my XTRs even

Tried Time on a buddy's bike and they were very nice

Incidentally know of someone selling a pair of almost new Time Atac Carbons for R1500. They were R2500 new I think and they were used once
