Trial Bikes for kids

Hi

The other day my 7yo son and I watched an older kid (about 10) with a trial bike, doing a few tricks onto a treestump and other stuff.  Then I showed him some Danny Macaskill YouTube videos.

Now he wants a trial bike.  He currently rides a cheapy 20" MTB, but has taken the saddle off, to be like the "real thing"

The question is, where does one buy these bikes, and are there any small enough for him? I spoke the LBS and said he had no idea where to start looking.  I was then wondering whether BMX would be a start.  He said that most BMXs would be too big, not from a wheel size point of view, but rather reach.

Thanks

I don't know about trials bikes for kids. Quite a niche market so pretty expensive.

I just came to say you should put the saddle back on. He could get seriously hurt without it.

My other bit of advice is to show him some dirt jump videos. Bikes are way cheaper and readily available. Some decent used ones in the classifieds too. Its not the same thing. But if you have a kid that aspires towards pulling off some bike tricks. You can't go wrong with a jumper. Far more useful as a bicycle. And the ideal tool to learn tricks on.

My first thoughts as well ... even an undersized saddle ...

An exposed pipe can cause some serious damage ....

Took our 7 year old for skills training a few weeks back.  FIRST thing the trainer did - checked all the bikes, and asked the parents to make SURE "bar end plugs" were replaced on those bikes whit expose bar ends .... some horror stories of kids coming of and the exposed pipe digs into soft tissue ....

as for a trial bike ... would be interesting to know what options are out there.  Our little one also adores Danny's videos !

I have been to just about every bike shop around and have not seen 1.

Guys you could maybe ask Recycles in Belleville they might be able to point you in the right direction. Or you could ask Mercer to build you 1 they are in southern subs.

As for size you do get smaller ones as the 1 I added.

Thanks for the feedback.

As regards the saddle, yeah that I realize is dangerous, so the saddle is back on and at it's lowest position.

With the market seeming so small a custom build is probably out of the question - he will outgrow it so quickly.

Maritz used his 20'' for 13 months ...

In the last few months the saddle on the 24'' have been raised some 100mm .... that is halfway towards fitting on the 26'' ....

Your best bet would be to get in touch with Dylan Victor or Quinton Radsma, they both imported trials bikes at some point in time.

Alternatively import from TartyBikes directly. I would suggest you look at a 20" with a short geometry and not a kids specific bike, this will give him some miles going forward before you have to buy a new bike.

The trials scene in Cpt is fairly active with the guys riding at least a few times a week, maybe take your son to go watch before you invest.

PS. Trials is an awesome sport!!
