What 29er MTB to buy

Hey all!

I need advise on what to buy, there are so many options and things to consider and its confusing to me.

I was cycling a few years ago as a means to lose weight and found that I liked it a lot, I had to sell my bike unfortunately.

I am looking to get back into it again and with all the options I am unsure what to buy.

Info on me and my needs:

I am 188cm tall & heavy.

I need a Large frame 29er.

Want to use it to ride daily around the farm and a bit on the road, I'm aiming to start at 15 km a day for a start and will end up doing trails within 4 months.

Budget is R5 000 - This will have to include a helmet at least, I will accessorize / upgrade it bit by bit monthly.

Any advice / references to a bike will be appreciated! (I prefer second hand as I believe you can get better bang for your buck)

Thanks!

Very simple. Search the hub

Nice comment vir n newbie op die hub. Vriendlikheid gaan n ver pad my vriend. Mens het nie altyd nodig om n smart ass , know it all te wees nie.

Welcome Qbom

often on that budget you will be lucky to get something half decent with reliable components..

I had a quick look and this looks good to me, but you would need to get a little more loot. will be great for farm and roads... 3x10 speed is old school, but gives a good range of gears.

Have a look.

I will shop around for that make and model, think I saw one or 2 on other market places :)

Not sure where you are located.

For slightly more you could buy a pretty decent entry level bike from Mark's Workshops.  They sell rental bikes that have done their stint.  When I started after a few decades off bikes this was my starting point.  Once I was sure this is what I wanted to do, I saved up, sold this bike and bought a full suspension bike.

Point being - a decent second hand bike will give you a LOT better service than a store bought bike at that price range

Welcome back to two wheels

I'm from pretoria, do you have a website or contact number? I can't find anything on the internet...

Hopefully some of the hubbers know of a similar setup closer to you.

Many bikeshops do trade in bikes, and have a second hand section ... though you may well get a better price on the classified section of the hub ...

In that price range your options will be filtered. If the Makrodales came in large sizes I would recommend that. Having said that, if I was in your shoes I would just get a 29er that I can for that price. And just start riding.

When I started cycling, a friend gave me a Giant XTC and it was already second hand when he got it. (Still using it now as a training bike and probably has 15000km on, that I know of at least)

If you can get yourself a bike with tubeless on, that would be a bargain. Otherwise, that is the first thing I will change.
