Not wanting to hijack the other post - this one is still about bearings - and wanting to hear JB's opinion on the subject as well;

What do you make of the Pace BB that is double sealed?

The

press blurb says it's serviceable and all the parts are replaceable

blablabla etc etc... Me being slightly skeptical i read that to mean

the thing isn't half as all singing all dancing as the 'double sealed'

claims make it out to be. Given the R1000 price tag i'd like to hear your thoughts

So what is the best Mountain bike BB currently available on the market?

Im sorry I missed your post and I hope you haven't dropped a G for a BB yet.

I don't know the Pace BB as I've never seen nor examined one. However, I can tell you it isn't worth R1 000 - no BB is worth that. There's a beautiful thread on this forum about replace bearings in external bearing BBs and a similar process is followed for replacing internal bearing BBs. Just about any BB is serviceable although they're mostly sold as throwaway parts. Buy a standard Shimano or compatible BB for a few hundred rand, note the bearing number before you fit it and go ride. When the BB gets rough, buy two of the said bearings and do the overhaul job in your garage on an evening when TV is bad. This is Monday to Sunday.

I don't know what double sealed means in Pace parlace but if you read my comments in a hub post about seals, you may understand what they could mean.

Thanks for your advice and the overview on BB's - I've not parted with my hard earned yet and when Mud Dee mentioned in his post that the XT BB is serviceable I was already smiling Big%20smile a massive smile and counting the saving over the Pace BB. Now that you mention checking out the bearing number I'll definitely do that (and enjoy the current winter mud bath conditions without worrying about the replacement BB costs)
