Its 2 completely different riders with goals. LM has been a GC Tour rider in focus, not a stage hunter of sorts.

TDD got as much with LM and his GC overalls, 1st African, African Team, Top 10 etc. Top 10 at any 3 week Tour is massive.

Cummings got great coverage, I was at the Tour on the stage when he won, its was rad, but it was also rad having LM in the very very select group after doing Tourmalet, Hourquette, Azet and Peyresourde where Cummings was zig zagging up the last climb.

Each have done very well, its not always about a win as such but a result and what goes with it.

Essentially the most important aspect now is not how great result were 2 yrs ago, its what is happening now that those results are not there for the team??

Too true, different riders for sure and different goals even on the same races bu just as a bit of devils advocate do you think that being given the GC tag means you can excuse the fact that they don't win stages or even look to go for the break season after season?

I heard a recent interview with Ben O' and he was saying he had a good season a couple of years back when he was just really starting in the pro ranks and got tagged as a GC rider but feels like he missed out on the 'racing' part of it all. For him it he said it's more about managing his efforts, his sleep, his food, his recovery, specific warmup and warm down and less about winning to chase consistency. He sounded so sad when he was saying he doesn't know how or have the skills to get into a break.

Maybe I'm old school but I've always thought you need to win a few races and stages to then earn the leader / GC tags and should start from that point. Very few GT's have been won by guys who don't take at least 1 stage.

All that aside, I just wish they'd find their groove again because winning breeds winning and we all want them doing well and showing the world what can be done.

Your money is safer betting on Cavendish to with a Grand Tour for TDD than LM

Geesh now that's low... LM has at least made it past week 1 the last couple of tours...

Cavendish is so over the hill though that he has started climbing the next one...

100% valid points here agree with many, which leads me to a simple question or observation then:

With all this being said is it right then for us to expect LM will win a GT if the above criteria hasn't been met along the way?

Would we not be right to say then " LM doing top 10 - even a Top 5 is a brilliant result"?

Too true. Nice to have the view point switched around a bit and come at it from a different angle. Often we can get locked into thought process and not take the time to flip it.

I probably need to rephrase.

TDD has a better chance of winning a GT with asking Dale Steyn to take up cycling than LM taking any jersey close to yellow, red, pink or white
