Hi guys, I'm moving to Howick, and am looking to get into mtn biking, I've never ridden a mtb before, and i dont want to spend alot, what is a good entry bike for myself and my six year son? On a very tight budget?

Thanks

It kinda depends on a lot of things, stuff like:

  • The purpose of the bike, like terrain, how often do you have any pre-existing conditions like a bad back or knees?
  • Wheel size you want to look at?
  • Then what could also work is that you could buy a uni-sex bike for yourself with the aim to give it to your son when he's slightly bigger one day (save on buying him another bike in a few years). I would then get a better than entry level bike for myself

I would look at going to the guys from Bike Market and possibly look at this:

https://bikemarket.co.za/product/bmn3-momsen-jr16-boy/ - no clue what size he would need though  :whistling:

https://bikemarket.co.za/buy-bike/mountain-bike/ for yourself, again no clue what size you would need

What is a very tight budget? I met a guy once that bought a dogma because his budget was tight and couldn't afford a specialissima. To me he doesn't have a tight budget problem at all but he was not happy.

Howzit and welcome to Howick. Great place to get into MTB.

I suggest you go visit Jowets Cycles or Hattons Cycles in Pietermaritzburg. They are well stocked, priced and knowledgeable. Send me a PM when you here and I will introduce you to the Howick Mountainbike and Trailrunning Club and our awesome trails.

For your 6 year old son.

20" Momsen with regid fork. Must be as light as you can. Advertise on the hub that you are looking for one.

For You

Anything because from here on in it is only about your son.  :D

Hopefully you have anothe 3 or 4 years that you can hang in there.

Hi

It's difficult to tell you what to buy, but I can tell you what not to buy.

If you are on a tight budget, you might be tempted to buy from a supermarket.............don't..........stay away (unless its a Cannondale from Makro).

Bikes at Makro, Pick nPay, Checkers are rubbish. They don't work from day one and fall apart at the drop of a hat.

Rather visit a good bike shop in your area and get advice. There are some good, entry level bikes out there that will meet your needs.

Hi, I have literally just bought a bicycle for my daughter. 1 year older at 7 and she is about 1.2m in height.

We bought a used Titan 24' 9r pro off the hubs classifieds. Really well specced little bike. Its on the big side but that was intentional as they tend to grow quite a bit at this age, or so I have been told.

Preferred the disc brakes as I suck at working on cantilever brakes. The spec was also good and I have 2 other little ones who will move onto it so that helps justify the cost.

PLEASE stay away from the Makro type bikes, she has a Raleigh that literally started falling to bits after a year.

For you, why not start off with a Giant Talon 3 or stance, etc. Good quality and well specced at a decent price.

Otherwise look for an older Giant Trance in the classifieds. Just make sure it is the correct size for you, nothing ruins the hobby like an incorrectly sized bike....

Good advice on the not to buy except when you buy from Decathlon .
