Safe routes during the week

Hi guys, I’m based in Joburg south and at looking for a route I can train on during the week that won’t pose too much danger for me in the afternoon. My greatest fear is being knocked down by some impatient drivers and taxis that try to beat the traffic rush. Any suggestions? I only have a road bike.

Yes - a few rules though

 

Wednesday 15.30 is the VWE track academy session, and they will ask you not to ride a geared/braked road bike on the track while they are training. Saturday afternoons are often track races - you're welcome to enter, but no road bikes.

At other times during the week you will probably be the only person there, however if there are track guys training they might ask you to stay above the white line (upper half of the track).

 

Both of these are safety requirements - track bikes do not have brakes so they cannot avoid you if you are on their line and you decide to use yours. 

 

As an extra idea look for a track training session (usually Saturday mornings) - they will put you on a track bike and give you some instruction on how track cycling works.
