Aluminium is soft so depending what kind of polisher you use you don't need to sand so much. For example when I did motorcycle/car rims I didn't sand it at all just used a grinder with good polish wheel and compound. If you don't have a polisher you could finish it with metal polish or the old way with braso and newspaper. 1200 grid is more than sufficient for any of these ways.

I will do when I get going with it, gonna get all my stuff together first before I start the project.

They can end up looking pretty sweet once the chainrings are back on the arms.

Hmm - i would use a buff attached to a bench grinder and polishing bars. Have done it myself - just be careful when you are polishing as the thing can turn in to a missile. Aluminium buffs up better than chrome but it oxidises quickly as well so you need to seal it. Used to do our motorbike side covers and they looked really bling.

 

Very dirty job though.

 

Water paper wont get you the chrome like finish if thats what you want.
