If they mail it to an address in the UK, they charge VAT and as they can't see your passport to issue the VAT refund form, you CANNOT claim it back. You will pay VAT in the UK.

It actually can be claimed back at the point of departure from the UK. Their system is almost exactly the same as ours.

 

I confirmed this with one of my VAT colleagues in our UK office (I'm a tax consultant with a Big 4 firm).

 

All necessary forms are available at the departing Airport. The VAT is either paid back to you in cash or deposited to your bank account.

You get leeway of R5000 (That was amount a year ago) of goods purchased . so if its below that value, then don't need to pay SA VAT or Import taxes.  (not shipped goods)
