CO2 cartridges - Can they be recycled / refilled?

What is the best way to dispose of empty CO2 cartridges?

I usually toss them in the recycling bin but I'm really not sure where they end up.

It would be good to be able to return them to bike shops who could then get them back to suppliers to be refilled and resold and in doing so we can preserve the planet.

Any ideas?

Not good enough peevee. Everyone on bikehub knows that if you want to to preserve the planet then you have to go vegan.

 

But I know that the pellet-gun shops re-use their BB gun CO2 cartridges... Maybe give it to them. If I'm correct it is the same size?
