CO2 cartridges - Can they be recycled / refilled?

What is the best way to dispose of empty CO2 cartridges?

I usually toss them in the recycling bin but I'm really not sure where they end up.

It would be good to be able to return them to bike shops who could then get them back to suppliers to be refilled and resold and in doing so we can preserve the planet.

Any ideas?

Put them in the same recycling bin where aluminium cans go. They'l get melted and re-cycled that way. They cannot be re-filled.
