pennypilot Posted July 19, 2020 Share Hi all I have an old family bicycle that has been floating around the garage for over 20 years! From what I am told it was purchased round about 1945 by my grandmother. It is unfortunately in a bad state with a lot of rust. I guess it will require a complete strip and respray. I basically want some help on where to start. I want to try and save as much of the original parts as possible. How do I go about stripping all the rust and paint to start over? I hope the photos are attached. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks Henry marshace
LBKloppers Posted July 20, 2020 Share Dude, in Tanzania you will find everything you need on that bike and you'll find it cheap. Tires, rims, spokes, seat, the whole lot.
FirstV8 Posted July 20, 2020 Share Its called a " Complete Nut and Bolt Restoration " Document everything as it is on photos and video . . Start at one end and strip off the parts putting each section in containers carefully marked ie " Front end fork " ' Back brakes " Cranks and pedals " .etc .Then decide whether parts are restorable or need to be replaced with new . . Keeping it original will always keep the value higher .. If original parts are still available it makes it easier to complete the project . Good luck and enjoy the journey . CAAD4 Posted July 20, 2020 Share I used a product called Plascon Removall a few years ago, to remove 30 years of rust from a frame. It worked well and rinses off with water. It's an ambitious project. Good luck.
