Garmin Service

hi jerry ' date='thanks for advise on 705[/quote']

Hope it helps!

Just to add to this thread, it seems a lot of the teething troubles

Garmin had with the 305 have been addressed with the 705. I have

had no mechanical problems with my unit and have not heard of

any other 705 owners having problems. Has anyone had problems

with a 705?

I have had the unit freeze up on the map page once in a while. Anyone

else had this problem?

Also, for other people's interest, I told Chucky that I use mine on

my motorbike, where it works fantastically well...

Cant identify with any of those problems but perhaps you do have one of the few duds, and with your replacement you wont have any more issues.

On the Epic one of the guys I was seconding had his clip for his handlebar mounting break. Went to the Garmin guys, they checked in a couple of boxes then said they didnt have spares. I got a feeling of indifference, as they said just use a screwdriver and sort it out after the Epic - This compared to the professional service offered by the Polar guys!!

I have had my 305 for about 4 years I think, - never missed a beat.!

These are mass produced electronic gizmos, they fail, thats the sad truth, as long as the agents replace and repair, alls good with me.!

My Quest (which is at least 5 years out of warranty) was playing up a while ago, took it to the agents, they said pop back tomorrow, came back a few days later, the guy says, "Hey Man, sorry, we destroyed your unit when we tried to fix it", then he pulled out a voucher and told me to go fetch a new one at Cape Union Mart.

Avnic here is very good as far as service gos Muxman, take your unit to em direct.!

I bought a Nuvi 710  main reason was to get the bluetooth and FM transmitter so I could talk and hear my call on my car system or on the unit itself.

The feedback that the other caller hears is horendous ... on both the system itself and when it runs through my car audio system.

The sms function does not work properly either..

Garmin reply:

Good day,

I went to the compatible Bluetooth phones you phone is not

listed

please see link

If you wish you can bring the unit to our office so we can

test the unit

I know they offered for me to bring it in to be tested, but for R4000 plus, it is crazy :(:(:(:(

I hear other 710 users ahve a similar problem with the SMS portion and the handsfree portion.

My sony Ericsson P1i is bluetooth compatible, they have hundreds of other sony's listed, surely it is listed cos it is a newer fone ... bluetooth is bluetooth .... duh ... i left it at that cos i was just plain P1ssed off

I must admit, I was also p.o.'d off with the Garmin service (or rather "lack thereof")

at the Epic. I wanted a spare battery for my heart rate strap and they told me they

had none and then said

Go ask Polar
!!!

I finally just went to the local pharmacy, but how's that for cr@p service when

they are sponsoring a MTB team!? Why do they bother?

I must admit I have just bought a Nuvi 760 and am absolutely

blown away by the unit. I have a Nokia (some old unit 6230?) and

didn't expect it to work, but it works like a treat!

Bluetooth, SMS (it even reads them to me - that really impresses

the kids!!!), phone book, call histories, the lot!

Well don't be surprised if you see Team Garmin Chipotle riding stage 11 of the TDF and the rest of the guys on Stage 12.

Guest Big H

EM got a Garmin GPS unit as a going away present when we left RSA in 2005. We luved it but the rubber protective strap around the unit came loose. It seemed as if the glue seperated. I took it back to Garmin and they gave me another one. Same happened with thie second one and I took it back again. The guy told me that the product is not really suited for RSA conditions. What the hell...... then why charge poor unsuspecting souls R5000-00 plus for the damn thing. They gave me another new one..... ianj we can swop out accessories!!!!!!!

I then bough another Garmin GPS 60x or something. This thing is big.... robust.... dust free and it works and works and works. It has a 2GB mini SD car and it takes all the info I need to load.

My advice. If you want a HRM buy Polar..... that is what they specialise in, like Toyota the best in cars, groupsets you know who (i will not discuss this) cellphones Nokia, laptops HP etc etc etc Why buy a HRM form somebody who sells GPS's?????? Bad choice I would say.

Incidently HP make printers....they have to be the worst Notebooks you could ever lay your cash out for but I get your drift.

'cos they're better? Wink

I replaced my Polar 725 with my Edge 305 as soon as I was given one

that worked properly (a year and a half ago). The one thing I have never

had an issue with is the HRM functionality and I really cannot see any

difference between the Edge as a HRM and the Polar (except of course

for the obvious bits like format/size and battery life). They work exactly the

same way and give exactly the same numbers.

The Polar is more convenient in that it is a watch, but the Edge is more

configurable and is also a GPS. I like the GPS functionality, so prefer the

Edge. I also prefer the cycling computer format of the Edge (display size,

ability to display more data, backlighting, ...) so for me it's the better

cycling computer. It's cr@p to run with, though - the Polar is much better

there...

HRM wise: no difference.
