I've recently fitted a new front 180mm Galfer disc rotor to my MTB and have picked up a ratcheting/rattle sound when I brake.Braking performance seems ok.

Have new pads and bled by LBS - New Level TL brakes and sound is same.

PS have had a similar sound on a past bike with Shimano brakes...

Is it something to do with the rotor where its been cut away/slotted for cooling and weight?

Galfer uses a squarish pattern like some of the Quaxar and alternative disc rotors vs Avid which use a slotted design...

I replaced the stock Avid rotor as it had worn a significant ridge but am almost keen to refit until I can get a replacement.

Cheers

If you mean the faint “round sounding” ratcheting they make when you pull hard on them...my brakes have always done that with resin pads and i think it’s something to do with the cutouts on different rotors too. Also make sure you have them right way around. They all have a unique sound imo. My Hope rotors vs the icetech ones i have now sounded different. But ive never found it offputting. On the contrary, i find it sounds better than that typical ‘metal to metal’ flat sound others make. I think it is just how the edges of the the cutouts on the disc interacts with the pads. Mine is not loud though...but if you listen for it you will hear it...especially leaning Hard on the front brake under load.
