Merida MATTS TFS400

Good day all!

I have a Merida Matt’s TFS400, I think it’s a 2009 model. I bought it second hand. I’m very happy with it.

I wanted to ask those in the know.

Where do you start with upgrading components? And how do you know what will work and fit? There’s so much out there, and all those components have different names and numbers. It’s quite overwhelming, I don’t know what questions to ask or where to begin.

So far, the first thing I’m going to do is change the stem with a shorter one.

Then I was thinking of changing the chain and gears. But do you replace with the identical components? Or is there a way to know what the upgraded set is?

I’m trying to get back into Triathlons, so I’d like my bike to be the best that I can make it, for training and beginner races. Eventually I’ll get a road bike, when I get a bit more serious into the sport.

I appreciate your input

Welcome

I would firstly upgrade the the tires and then the wheels (better hubs and lighter rims). I bought American Classic hubs in 2004, and they still work fine. I have had them on three of my bikes (lased to different rims) since getting them.

Ok awesome. How would I upgrade the hubs? What do I look for? It currently has Alex Rims on. With Crossmark tyres. What would you reclining for? Oh they’re 26”

For that bike, you are looking at 135mm quick release rear and 100mm qr front hubs. I would search the classifieds. Also find out from the bike shops what they have. It may be old stock, but I am sure there is a bargain to be found.

I have seen some very descent second hand wheel sets pop up. For my wheels, I got the hubs and rims and took it to my preferred bike shop to build up.

The other option is to get the bike properly serviced (new shifter cables and cable housings, brakes bled, and wheel bearings serviced) then ride the bike and save up for a newer one.
