Elbow Bursitis

Hi Okes.

I fall often. Too often.

I have developed a lump in my left elbow. A bursa I understand.

Has anybody had this problem?

A doctor (GP) who rides with me says I should just let it be.

The problem is that I am sick and tired of introducing myself and my elbow to strangers it has become so big.It doesnt hurt at all but is very uncomfortable when I rest on my elbows.

A friend of mine who is a cardio thorax surgeon says I should have it surgically removed.

Has anybody had this condition that has required surgery to repair?

What is the recovery time?

Thanks

I got one. Clipped my elbow on a wall while riding. I need to get it removed. Ortho said it would be a 1 day job. Would also like to hear from someone else before I commit.

I've had some recent experience here -

A proper bursitis happens quite suddenly in response to the impact. I have seen some pretty remarkable results for a friend of mine just by taping his elbow with kinesio tape (2 lengths of tape with the one half cut into ~5mm tape strips, and then taped in a criss-cross pattern across the elbow). Drained it in a few days.

If you have a slow onset problem then it is likely you have a hematoma - swelling may follow the impact by a few days. You can massage softly around the edges and it will slowly go away over weeks. I'm dealing with one of these at the moment.

I have had it drained about 5 times beforeI could eventually diy the process.

Problem now is that it is hard.

I pressed a needle into it and it is non productive. Nothing comes out.

My specialist friend said that he thinks a ortho would need to fix it up. Not my GP in his consulting room.

I have a small one on my elbow thanks to someone turning the power on while I was fitting a socket....got a shock and my reflexes banged my elbow straight into the corner of a wall...
I asked my local quack about this years ago and he said to just leave it as you could damage the elbow fluid sac thing? I don't know...it doesnt bother me so I'll just leave it...

Does yours change size?

Mine gets bigger and smaller over periods of time.

Like I said, no pain at all. Just irritating when I rest on my elbows.

Hasn't really changed in 15 years odd....I did bang it again years ago and it did swell and become inflamed/infected or something and the quack gave me some antibiotics and that was it.

I recently had a fall on the road and a Bersitus started on my upper hip section. Mine got so inflamed, sore and swollen that i went to a sports doctor and his treatment for getting rid of it was the following:

1) Have an X-Ray and Ultra-sound done. This will eliminate any fractures, broken pieces of bone and also determine where and what the fluid sack is pushing against. Usually a main artery which causes the discomfort and pain.

2) Take calcium, Vitamin C and Zinc capsules. All roughly 1000mg per day

3) Take 2 anti-inflammatory's twice daily. 12 Hours apart. Roughly 550mg/dose

4) One muscle relaxant at night so so you can get some sleep.

5) Wear at all times compression pants. In your case a compression elbow sock.

6) Ice pack the "***" out of the area every 3Hrs for 20mins

7) Receive Physio treatment at least twice a week. Physio will massage and work the area.

8) If the above doesn't reduce the size of the Bersitus then draining will be the next option. Draining done with a 14 gauge needle and no local anesthetic.

Make sure you have a good medical aid as the above is not cheap but the first 5 steps are really working for me.
