bertusras Posted November 25, 2020 Share The road between Mooi River and Giants Castle and some of the other tar / gravel roads in that area are amazing. Dead quiet and so scenic. Plenty of accommodation in the area too. That is an excellent option too, as well as the road between Howick and Nottingham Road.
Fat Boab Posted November 25, 2020 Share When you get back to JHB, consider riding in the areas just outside the Cradle e.g. Harties, the satellite road, Maropeng, out to Magalies etc. There's lots of good riding out there on (mostly) quiet roads with the usual SA road safety caveat... Hi Guys, I am planning a 2 week trip to do some riding away from Johannesburg... a bit tired of riding the cradle 3 to 4 4 times a week. The coastal areas are obviously scenic but need to plan the ride accordingly... also not a good idea to ride on the N2 ... But where in the country do you think is the best place for rod biking.... Thank you for your responses.

jackievs Posted November 29, 2020 Share Pilgrims Rest to Graskop would definitely be a bit dodgy, but the road between Graskop and Sabie would be perfectly fine, as would Sabie up Long Tom. I've done a fair bit of cycling from Mount Sheba/Crystal Springs to Pilgrims Rest (both road and gravel) and it's by far the best riding that I've done. However I would also take on Plett to Natures in the off-season. And then I've also done Oliviershoek Pass on the border between FS and KZN which was pretty damn good, but the rest of the roads could be worrisome (both for traffic and your legs if you're gonna spend 2 weeks there). I'd probably set up base in Sabie if I were going to spend a week or two riding. You can ride in so many directions from there, and if you've got an MTB, take that too to go ride in the plantation/forest.Thanks for the suggestions... Thank you, I have done a ride from Fourways through the Cradle to Maropeng (the museum)... road from the T junction turning right after the caves, becomes narrow and rough along the edge no option to bail out onto the shoulder ... but thankfully I made it...
