Would those of you who are more familiar with tubular wheels recommend them for use by social cyclists.?

Or are they specialist equipment better left for racers with team support etc.

I guess I'm asking with maintenance and practicality in mind rather than performance.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.!

The two biggest factors to consider would be:

1. What do you do if you puncture with tubbies? By this I mean how do you get back home/finish line etc.

2. Then once you get home, are you prepared for the extra running expenses associated with tubbies? To patch a tubbie is a lot of hassle, most people just throw away and buy a new one - which means is R800 a puncture.

Simply put: no.

They are (practically) impossible to fix on the road and are bloody expensive to replace.

I have two sets of tubbies for racing, but still use my clinchers every other time.

Thanks all - that's pretty much what I thought, but needed confirmation.

Guess I'll stick with some good clinchers.

No. Unless...

1. You are a social cyclist who often goes out on a training ride with a back-up vehicle

2. You want to gain those 100'ths of a second in the odd race you do each year

3. You can afford to spend R800 each time you puncture

Clinchers are practical, and they really will not hold many cyclists in the world back on performance when compared to tubular.

Tubular wheels are on avg. lighter than clincher versions, but if you are that social cyclist, i am guessing you can lose the weight elsewhere :)

Thanks for this thread I was also thinking of buying a nice set of training wheels like Easton EA70's and then buying a second hand set of HED Stingers 60's tubulars to race with. Would cost me about R8000 for both sets whereas I wanted to fork out R7500 for one set of Ksyrium SL premiums.

After reading how much it cost to repair a puncture on a tubbie I think I'll rather just stick to one set of good clinchers I mean it's not like I normally start in the front bunch of a race anywaysLOL

Look up the meaning of "anacromism".
Well spotted smiley32.gif But do you mean 'anachronism' maybe?

Thank goodness I went clincher on my wheels...Was also tempted by the Tubbies but reasoning kicked in when I saw what it would cost to fix..Big%20smile

Tubbies are great to race with - I absolutely love them, but the "anachronism"

quip is pretty much spot on. Good clinchers are close (but not there - yet)...

There's no better feeling than riding with a set of 1kg Zipp 202s pumped up to 160...

I'm looking for new wheels, but am holding on for a year or so until tubeless road

tyres hit the mainstream. That's gonna be the NBT, IMHO...
