doubleDza Posted February 8, 2021 Share Hey hubbers, I’m in the market for a more hiking friendly mountain bike shoe and came across the First Ascent Gravel mtb shoes. Just wanting to know if anyone has any experience with these or if anyone can recommend a different shoe. I’m not looking to break the bank or anything but would still like decent. Thanks I’m advance guys.
HenkD Posted February 8, 2021 Share By more hiking friendly you mean you push your bike up the hills? Sorry just joking. Edited February 8, 2021 by HenkD
ChrisF Posted February 8, 2021 Share Specialized 2FO flat shoes are very comfortable for walking. May not meet the budget requirement though .... Where did you see the First ascent shoes ? Any small sizes ??
Bundu Ric Posted February 8, 2021 Share I bought a pair about a month ago, I use them on flat pedals. The one thing that is a bit irritating is the shoe has an almost normal shoe sole pattern although more aggressive, which I find does not always give you a proper centre foot placement on the pins of the flat pedals. This is where I think the likes of the Specialised 2F0 with the very flat sole design will be much better. Using them with cleats I think will be fine. doubleDza Posted February 8, 2021 Share By more hiking friendly you mean you push your bike up the hills? Sorry just joking.LOL I've been known to push my bike up a hill or two in the past. But my bigger concern is "unclipping" on a technical climb and twisting my ankle with the more XC focused shoes. Its happened a few times to me, lucky without any major injury

Appreciate the response. I'm kinda inbetween flats and clips at the moment so this is exactly the type of feedback I'm looking for

Any small sizes ?? I saw them at Sportsmans Warehouse and on the First Ascent website. I think there are small sizes available but it depends on how small you want to go. The Specialized 2FO does look great but at 4k they're out of my budget ChrisF
Walt Jabsco Posted February 8, 2021 Share Do not use these shoes with flat pedals, as they are not designed for this - the grip will be terrible. Edited February 8, 2021 by Walt Jabsco Bundu Ric and ChrisF
Zebra Posted February 9, 2021 Share my cycling mate, Brett has a pair, he loves them (used Crank Brothers pedals and cleats with them)... Is used to wearing carbon, or more-expensive shoes generally, found these super-comfortable, super affordable.Cheerschris
Red Robin Posted February 9, 2021 Share I use Scott mtb shoes, they are about R2500 and with the children I am off and on the bike alot, (well that is my story and I am sticking to it ) They don't slip on gravel and stones. I use with flats. They are the men's ones btw as the choice was better than the ladies so I got the men's.

Its happened a few times to me, lucky without any major injury You shouldn't twist your ankle when unclipping with any shoes. It should be a natural movement. Check the angle of your cleats (affects how twisted your foot needs to be to release) as well as the release tension on the pedal. My Look MTB pedals were initially a pain to unclip from compared to my cheap Shimano ones, but after sorting the above, all is well. Also, spray silicone spray on the cleat and pedal interface - sometimes the metal/metal friction causes them to stick a bit.
Michael S Posted November 12, 2021 Share Has anyone used these shoes with some feedback? These look pretty good at a great price. Ticks all the 2FO alternative boxes it seems? https://www.firstascent.co.za/gravel-mtb-shoe?utm_term=&utm_campaign=&utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=ppc&hsa_acc=9477659762&hsa_cam=1338915013&hsa_grp=53277706466&hsa_ad=260618950680&hsa_src=g&hsa_tgt=pla-293946777986&hsa_kw=&hsa_mt=&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_ver=3&gclid=CjwKCAiAvriMBhAuEiwA8Cs5lWcTXX8rNh0i_mUgDAxl6DvpS-BYM71MuZOIYBUKuiMO-t9lzvWqERoCwn4QAvD_BwE Edited November 12, 2021 by Michael S
Sepia Posted November 12, 2021 Share I have been using these for years. Best cycling shoe I have ever used. Comfortable, waterproof, Gore-Tex, easy to unclip and flipping tough. Walked many miles in them. Not First Accent though but definitely worth looking at. Best recommendation I can make.
