Raleigh

You can bet a good dual sus for about R15000 (as a result of everything being more expensive)  Look at mongoose, felt, trek, and um ur, yes, raleigh.  Obviously it will have deore on it and if you lucky you may be able to get an LX or XT rear derailer at that price.  THe disc breaks may be hydrolic as well.  THE shcks should be rockshox tora and a fox rear shock (without lockout)  All this is fine for starters.

If however, you like bike jewlery, then hard tail in that price class may give you LX or XT throughout.

If ride comfort is your choice than dual sus is the only choice.

If learning about bike handling is high on your list, then hard tail, but then go the whole hog and consider a full rigid single speed (with back pedal brakes), which is of course much cheaper

from all reputable sources of info the raleighs are reliable dependable value for money bikes - everyone i know who has ever had a prob has had no issues getting things sorted under warranty so it is a good option. but it would all depend on your budget and the type of mtb riding you want to do.

I did the Epic this year on a Raleigh hardtail and reckon it's a fantastic

bike. The only problem is putting up with the comments about riding one.

The FS Raleighs have been a little suspect in the past, I do believe...

yep, the FS's had a broblem witht he frames breaking - but all the peeps i know who had that were given new frames.

personally, after lots of research last year i went the hard tail option - my budget was intially R10k and I upped it to R15k but to find a lighter bike with decent components FS's just weren't an option.

slowpoke, you poser, you ride a mongoose meteore hardtail, not a raleigh.  How much is MTN/Raleigh paying you to punt their product online?WinkLOL

Obviously, not enough research as I went for the mongoose canaan (comp) with cheaper jewelry for the same price.

If weight is an issue I suggest getting a road bike !

If you want a light bike, you will have to leave the shop with a lighter wallet as well. cheap, light or MTB chose two.

kona, yep i ride a mongoose - and if the question had been "what mtb for R15-R20k i'd have said to go mongoose cos they rock (and i've got much better components than you) but the dude was asking about raleigh or FS and is the latter what - well all depends on budget etc.

but yeah, i personally will never buya  raleigh for myself cos every one that i've test ridden i've not liked personally...
