affordable chain rings, Tru Vativ alternative...

...am having a 38-tooth chain ring (and new cluster and new 10speed chain) fitted to my 2015 Specialized Epic Comp (spinning out with a 36-tooth, cannot go smaller on rear cluster, to get lower than 11-tooth...)

The bike has TRU VATIV chain rings on, over R1000+ j-u-s-t for the FRONT/BIG ring (the small ring is very reasonable), around R350, no problems there...

Since this is an older, 10-speed set-up, over R1K for a single chain ring seems crazy, and a decent Shimano ring is around R360....

Shimano needs a small alteration to make it fit - I am more than comfortable with this - they have not done it before, but are keen to try...

alteration shown here: https://youtu.be/B0N07GfnNw4

(actual alteration around the 4-minute mark...)

any OTHER 104 BCD 38-tooth AFFORDABLE chain rings in case the Shimano 'alteration' does not fit?

Quite annoyed with Shimano for adding a small proprietary 'angle' to prevent it from fitting other brands - riding and racing with Shimano since I was 18, so 41 years later, still love the brand; their recent 'trickery' not so much....!

thanks

Chris

I've done the same thing and fit a shimano chainring by filing down the tabs. Note that shifting performance will suffer slightly because the relative position of the teeth of the two chainrings is likely to be different to how the design intended them to be.

Have a look at Paragon Technologies website (check catalogue). They would have had the chainring in the past, I'm pretty sure.

If they keep it you will have to enquire via your LBS.

Considering the Price of Bicycle Spares of Late e.g. MTB Tyre R700 +

34 Tooth Csixx NW for R750+

I Would just Pay the R 1K for the Chain Ring and return your Magnificent Machine to It's former Glory.

I actually think they are R1350, thus the reason for me seeking more affordable solution, but I get your sentiment: though with front and rear shock service, cassette, chain and then chain rings, it starts getting up there in price!

Thanks
