Good evening guys. My road bike has had its time... the shifting has become a pain and even after my recent service at a popular bike store the shift is sticky and noisy. I have a rc1000 raliegh, changed the to flat bars and managed to source 3x8 mtb shifters. Question now is can I upgrade the back gears to a 10 speed? And have a single chainring up front ? Also is there anyone in CT doing these conversions? The bike is for commuting around the area and to work. I just thought that if thevshifting isn't work well I could shed some extra kilos and have a slightly faster ... meant light bike lol ????

It is likely that your 8sp free hub will not accept a 10sp cassette. so you would need to change the rear hub/rear wheel to fit something in the 10sp range. If you did that then a 1x10 would be possible. You'd also need a 10sp shifter and compatible deraileur at that point.

You should be able to do this yourself actually.

Should be able to use your current crankset depending on the mounting type and only put a 1x chainring on it.

Only issue is your freehub body, as 100Tours said, the 8s might not accept the 10s

Not sure if you have access to a cassette tool, if you do, it would be easy to check. All you would need, tool wise, for the conversion would be Allen keys and a cassette tool.

So I should probably get a 10spd rear wheel and 10 shifter ... then contact nils for the conversion. I'd attempt this myself but my previous try was unsuccessfully lol ???? thanks for the input gents. Will post before and after pics and also weight ????
