Exploring some of the numerous Constantia Greenbelt offerings, I checked signs to see where I was allowed/not allowed to ride…

THIS one had me perplexed, an older Pedal Power sign saying NOT to ride, and older ‘general’ rules board, now in disuse, saying not to ride, and a NEW sign giving permission to ride! What to do, I did not ride, since:

1. The trail IMMEDIATELY below the road crossing to THIS trail said no riding…

2. thought I would try and do the right thing, and seek clarity!

Below signs show where the confusion rises; that PPA sign is covered in mound/fungi, so has been there some years, the new BIG sign on new poles looks to be about 3-6 months old, at a guess? The old wooden sign s falling over, and in any case superseded by the latest sign.

Curious, is all?!

This is not a riding track - there’s a section at the top that is a link trail between the  Rathfelder and Bel Ombré sections of the cycling legal Greenbelts, but this part of the greenbelt is not a cycling trail.

Thanks, I think somehow it needs to be made clearer, happy I did not ride it, but it was a close call!

do you maybe have a mini map of the area, to help me better understand the ‘legal’ part? You seem to know the area well, thus the request - thanks!

I assume you were at the circle?

If so, the strava heatmap shows the riding trails (red arrows added for clarity, not direction)

For the area as a whole, you can only ride on the designated cycling tracks. Not that the specific entrance at which the sign is posted is a designated cycling track or that the whole place is designated as a cycle track (then it'd just be a cyclist without the wording?). The signs on the path being the signs that indicate whether designated or not.

Ignore the age of the signs, that's irrelevant. Then it's fairly easy to figure out 😉

Trail Forks seems to have it mapped: https://www.trailforks.com/region/constantia-greenbelt-17002/

IMHO, If the Parks Board says Cycles are allowed, I would think they are the higher authority. Apparently its not part of the 'Trails Network' - so what - not all green belt strips in the country are designated "trails".   Commuters and other recreational riders etc who are not PPA etc members couldn't give a sh!t about "unofficial signs" from some cycle group claiming to represent everyone with a bicycle. The CITY OF CAPE TOWN (Municipality/Greenbelt authority) clearly are of the opinion that cycling is allowed ( ! ? )

Just for info, I am very much against rogue riding - and belong to just about all the mtb trails bodies.

I think that the newer sign is not correct.
The PPA / City of Cape Town endorsed one should be followed.

A lot of work went into this trail network with Go / No Go sections on the greenbelts. Lets all stick to that.

The "unofficial signs" are there in partnership with the relevant government authority. On the opposite side to the PPA logo is the City of Cape Town logo.
