Event Name: Old Mutual go2berg
When: 03/06/2023 - 09/06/2023
Where: Frankfort, Frankfort, Free State
Category: Old Mutual go2berg

Europeans, North Americans, South Americans, Scandinavians, our African brothers and sisters, Capetonians, hear us now!

Did you know that Cape Town is not South Africa? Yes, you heard it here first; beyond the artisanal cocktails of the Waterfront and the plump grapes of the vineyards lies South Africa for adventurous souls.

This South Africa is bushveld. This South Africa is wilderness. This South Africa is the mighty Drakensberg. This South Africa is six-foot, nine-year-old barefoot schoolboys playing touch rugby in the winter frost because they’re so tough the only thing that can make them cry is their mothers giving them chicken for breakfast instead of steak. This South Africa is the Old Mutual go2berg, the all-new, slightly familiar multi-stage mountain bike race that will take you to the places you imagine in your head when you think of visiting Africa.

Some mountain bike events will take you around in circles and bill your ride as a wild African experience just because the course designer couldn’t find parking outside of his favourite Stellenbosch coffee shop. They’ll also just bill you. (“Want toilet paper with that toilet? Well, that’ll be extra…”)

The Old Mutual go2berg will provide a South African mountain bike experience that’s unique but familiar, that’s challenging but comforting, that’s new but old, and take you on a testing, tasty, tour (we don’t say journey, everyone with an Instagram account and a father who didn’t give enough hugs as a child is on a journey these days).

As a reincarnation of the hugely, wildly, giddily successful joberg2c, The Old Mutual go2berg is the tour across South Africa where the scenery changes and the route takes you somewhere special every day.

At  go2berg, the route matters but the results don’t. It’s a ride, it’s a race, it’s an experience where the trails, beer, and post-ride stories flow like the money from your bank account when you finally decide to commit to a life of mountain biking.

History tells us that when the first European settlers arrived in South Africa and saw the mountains, the first thing they said was, “hey boet, we gonna make some sick trails on that”.

It took them a few hundred years and countless oxen to carve out the routes, but now South Africa is a country blessed with trails and some of the world’s best trail builders. These now come together in beautiful harmony to form the key principle of go2berg - a mountain bike event built by mountain bike riders who love mountain biking.

At go2berg, riders will experience a South Africa that few people see; wide open spaces morphing into secluded forests, glowing mountains as the sun rises, and rivers roaring in lieu of lions.

Riders will eat the best South African cuisine, straight from the farm and most likely prepared by the farmer himself. The finest local ales and lagers will be served in the evenings (and probably along the way if you wink convincingly at the locals - though not too convincingly lest you end up married before the end of day one).

The most humble, happy people will be on call throughout the event to ensure your experience becomes a treasured one. The go2berg is the ride you’ve always dreamed of, with all the scenery, all the steak, all the singletrack, all the hills, and, of course, all the free coffee you can dream of.

A great piece of writing for a great race. It has inspired me - I am going to rent out my children and sell my spare bikes (maybe) to scrounge some cash for an entry. As the writer claims the word journey is bandied about almost as much as ‘single track’ but this race really is a journey in the sense of a journey being an actual journey.  Now if I could just remember my Instagram password
