My ageing EAGLE GX drivetrain has started skipping when shifting down the smallest 3 gears. Cyclelab said bent hanger and it seemed to work for 1 ride then started again. I've tried other hangers too. I have less than 0.5  XX1 chain but original derailleur and casete with about 14000km on. I got a new Deore 12sp derailleur at a giveaway price and was told mixing Sram and Shimano 12 speed is ok and the RD is less finicky. The issue persists and I'm going to replace the cassette maybe with another GX as it's served me really well. Will mixing components work or am I in for a new microspline driver and have to buy a Shimano cassette?

Thanks

if im reading right and cassette has 14k km on it…the bottom two cogs are most likely finished, hence the skipping. Shimano sells theirs loose, since they are the first to go. You can eek some more life out of it with a dremel if you feel so inclined. But call it, 14k km is plenty.

I’m a mixey-matchy heathen too, it works fine. I’ve run AXS on shimano casettes, XT on GX cassettes.

Shifter needs to match to rear mech as noted above, chain, chainring(not critical) and cassette matched for best results.

you can't use shimano 12s chains on SRAM kit. You can use Sram chains on shimano kit however.

@MORNE  you cannot buy lose Shimano cassette rings over the counter in SA I guess? Any suggestions where I can start looking? I have a Deore starting to skip on the bottom 2 rings.

Thx

Shifter and RD should be the same, although with 12sp the pull ratios are close enough that it works ok. (Ok, not perfectly.)

The RD most likely isn't your problem though.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards cassette but the price is making my eyes tear up.....

I was told that GX RD springs weaken over time but I'm feeling that the shiftings worse with the Shimano RD

I'm hoping to be able to fund a new RD next month....

The next plan will be to try new cassette and my GX RD. For 13500km my shifting has been pretty much flawless and I've gotten v good at setting B tension etc

They do pop up and are around, maybe just ask a reputable store to csll that aircon place (local shimano distro). I bought 3 sets from olympic cycles beginning of the year  when they were on sale for half that price👀😅

A pap RD spring will make for sluggish downshifts, not skipping. Upshifts will be fine. Similar symptoms to a worn cable.

Replacing the wrong thing is a waste of money, even if you got it at a good price.
