Oval Chainring? Gimmick or legit

I've tried Rotor ovals on my road bike and Csixx on my MTB. I'm not sold and went back to round 

What I did find was my road bikes shifting on the large rings got noisier and my MTB went through chainrings waaaay faster. By comparison I reckon my oem Sram chainring has lasted 4 times longer, maybe the Csixx material is softer? 

Also, as per an above post the clutch works harder and I had some ticking noises from my Eagle GX RD until I lubed it.
