Really depends on the deal. But in principle, sure, theres a few trails nearby worth travelling to. Again, depends on the amount of DH trail/riding you'll be doing.
West Rand, Hartys, Mpumalanga/Limpopo and KZN all have the kind of riding that could suit a DH bike. All have hosted nationals, including World Cups and World Champs in KZN.

Many years ago there was a DH nationals at Klaperkop, and that track was proper. Not sure how safe/accessible that still is these days.

then there’s iron throne at harries which is proper downhill/long travel riding. So if the deal is decent I would say do it.

I’m in a similar predicament in Stellenbosch now, deciding between getting a proper (but expensive) enduro bike for the odd times my 120-130mm “down country” bikes are outgunned, or buying a cheap downhill bike and just kakking off on the climbs, or only using it when shuttles are possible.

Me and a friend rode the klapperkop dh trail a few weeks ago. The trails are still there but a part from the very big loose rocks on the trail and berms it is still ridable and is very fun. There is a drop thats worn out and my friend almost ate ****, but is was still very fun.

I got a cheap as chips DH bike that only comes out when the hellsend shuttle days happen. Totally worth it for me.

This is probably the way I will go then also.

Every once in a while I get the desire to go bigger, but actually doing it will be such a rare occurrence, I can’t justify spending proper money on a decent enduro bike. The classifieds are loaded full of cheap DH bikes.

Just to clarify. That cheap as chips DH bike has done a Morzine trip and was just great.
