You make valid points, however I would still go for a bike bag if taking the bike. Last time I flew with a cardboard box it arrived completely torn open, as in my bike was completely visible. Also when travelling internationally they get pulled aside and customs give you a hassle 7 out of ten times, never happened since I got a bike bag.
Solid travel cases I would steer clear of, they are far too heavy and yes, they take a lot of space. However regular ones actually fold up pretty well.

You are 100% right about renting, if it’s a short trip. But on the other hand it is nice to ride your own bike.

Ja you also make valid points. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer to this whole bag vs cardboard box debate. It all comes down to what works for you.

For me the cost and storage restraints of having 2 bike bags/boxes (my wife also rides) plus the advantage of the ability to rent road bikes in Europe make it a hard no.

Bikebox company boxes are probably best bang for buck.

You can also make your own out of correx for about R500. It is very easy

The bikebox is just nice because of the protective inserts and the way it all folds down.

I have done a few expeditions on mine and about 8 flights local and international
