Another cyclist hit by car

Cat-i,

many cyclist say its uncool cause its brakes their speed and what ever more reasons they have but I say it is a cool thing to stop and obey the rules. Then you at least show some respect for your fellow road users.

If it can happen that more cyclist and other road users obey the rules more often, then probably there will be less incidents on the road.

to Kenneth - hope you get better soon dude, 'specially as chrispy has confirmed that you didn't jump a stop street.

Witrot, i have been cycling for a couple of years now, and put a good number of thousand km's on my bike each year (and a good number of hundred on the mtb as well) and i WILL ALWAYS STOP AT STOPS AND RED LIGHTS. not doing so is totally unacceptable and uncool and endangers all other cyclists by p'ing off the motorists. i have had this discussion with a very well known person who asked me "what kind of training ride will it be if you stop at all the lights"... my view is by stopping i have a safe training ride where i've obeyed the law and not pissed other road users off.

if you dont want to stop, head out of town to long roads without traffic lights or stop streets. there are enough of those around (trust me - ride out harties way, or go down south, or cycle off past pta towards mpumalanga... heck, i dont think there's a single traffic light between badplaas and barberton....)

cat-i, i always found when commuting that if you do stop and you do obey all the rules of the road the cars will usually (accepted, not always) show blatant respect for you. i've even had cars going thourgh busy intersections really slowly so that they stay next to me until i'm safely across! yes, i've also had some unpleasant incidents, but that will not make me disrespect everyone.

the group i ride in , which includes funriders and licensed riders always stop at stop signs and red traffic lights. we see it as "trainin" i.e. power training, see how quick u can accelerate from a standing start. someone u can jumps out of the saddle or stay in the saddle.
