Single Speed World Champs 2008

As mentioned before my favorite was still '06 when the SS race served as 'qualifying' for a go-kart race' date=' the winner of which was crowned SS World Champion

The qualifiers were chosen at random from the finishers of the SS race!

The golden speedos are for the single speed cyclo cross world champ and the tattoo or brand for the single speed mtb world champ.

These guys love partying, and these races have everything that made us love cycling so much.  They go for pure enjoyment and simplicity, if you look at a photo of Carl Decker(winner) he wore a zorro mask with a black cape, and an outfit that looked a lot like a black borat swimsuit!

The 2007 SSWC champion couldn't defend his title as he had to represent his country in the XC race at the Beijing olympics, so there are some pretty tough competitors at the SSWC.

Wish there were more SS races in SA.

Any others see the guy at the FPC race Saturday with the singlespeed peace 29'r or something like that? Did the 60k unlike DR, Scotty and 'em who needed all 27 gears just to do 30 something k's ...........

29inch wheels, single speed and a rigid fork ...... he did look a bit of the hippy type (old style helmet, hairy legs .......)

some races do have ss cats, but not very many. there's nothing stopping you riding yours at races.

How is the Crater Cruise course' date=' is it technical or mainly dirt road? [/quote']

They say last years was mainly dirt road with some bad soft sand patches and a bit of fun single track. It can't be bad if the roadies do it with their road shoes and pedals.

i did last year on a rigid singlespeed! the corrugations on the dirt road get you. there is very soft sand along the river on the "return" leg. also hectic rain caused sapping terrain in the last few kaysDeadthere is one short, sharp climb in the middle of the race, with a fun downhill. apparently they've added a new section to the race this year. my lbs owner was supposed to ride it this past weekend, so i'll see if i can add so more info.

cool. i thoroughly enjoyed it. it was the first race i did on my ss (apart from a 16kay at northern farm with my kid). would have enjoyed it more if i hadn't made the silly decision to ride it with a nice and unfamiliar saddle. i did the 25 kay the next day with the boys and had to ride standing up the whole way, then michh "forced" me to put in three hours at nf the same afternoon. never been in so much pain.
